I meant "genteel" in the previous post. And I meant condemned in the sense that Doogan is dealing with profound sadness and facing it quite symbolically in the beautiful southern home of his youth. I was in no way denigrating veterans. The narrator's voice and cadence described contemporaries dealing with dark realities at the grittiest level of modern armed conflict.

Taylor Brown condemns gentile Southern patrician young men to roles of war veterans returning from the sands of Fallujah to the sands of the Georgia coast, true patriots...who got the truly raw end of the stick.
